Video

Topaz for Web includes three main video capabilities (each described below). Use them on their own, or combine them in a single render.

  • Enhance & Upscale: Improves the quality of your video and increases its resolution, for example from 720p to 4K. Recovers detail, cleans up compression artifacts, and reduces noise along the way.
  • Frame interpolation: Changes the frame rate by generating new frames between your existing ones, either for smoother motion or for slow motion.
  • HDR & pro formats: Converts 8-bit SDR footage to true HDR in 10-bit and 16-bit professional delivery formats like ProRes, EXR, and H.265.

Upload your video

Select Video, click New, then either click Upload or drag and drop your files.

You can work with a single video or a batch. Upload several files and they queue up, rendering one after another.

There's no fixed limit on how long a video can be, so for example, you can render 2 hours video.

Topaz for Web currently accepts MP4 files, and we're working to expand the range of video formats we support.

Enhance & Upscale

Which model should I use?

One question decides it: can anything in the frame change?

  • No, it has to stay as shot. A recognizable face, text, a logo, a product, a close-up. Use Starlight Precise 2.6. This is the right answer most of the time.
  • Yes, and there is little detail left to recover. Wide shots, landscapes, crowds, stylized or animated work, heavily degraded footage. Use Astra 2, which re-imagine details rather than only recovering what is there.
  • I just need more resolution, quickly at low cost. Use Proteus.

If your footage has text, labels, or logos in it, choose Precise whatever else is true. Text is where Creative models still struggle.

The rest of this section explains the two modes and the models inside them.

The two modes

There are two ways to enhance and upscale in Topaz for Web: Precise and Creative. Both improve quality and raise resolution. The difference is how much freedom the model has to change what is in your footage.

Precise model keep the integrity of your source. It recovers detail that is already there: sharper facial detail and skin texture, cleaner hair, more convincing fabrics and materials, and clearer text, labels, and logos. Because it stays faithful to the input, Precise is the right choice whenever identity matters, such as a recognizable face, a logo, a product, or text on screen, and for restoration work where the result should be the same footage, only sharper and larger.

Creative models reimagine detail instead of only recovering it. It adds new texture and structure that the source never had, which is what you want on AI-generated, stylized, or heavily degraded footage that no longer holds enough information for a Precise model to work with. The trade-off is fidelity: at higher creativity, faces and fine text can shift.

Once you have picked a mode, choose a model and an output resolution.

Precise models

Starlight Precise 2.6

Our highest-quality Precise model, and the one to reach for first. It upscales up to 4K and renders faces, skin texture, hair, fabrics, and materials convincingly, with real clarity on text, labels, and logos. Best on footage that already has strong composition but looks soft, plastic, or slightly artificial, and on archival material that still holds enough detail to recover.

A Sharpness control with five levels sets how aggressively the model renders detail. Level 5 is full strength. Lower levels ease off, which helps on tightly packed detail under strong light (skin texture, hair, fabric, fur) where full strength can read as artificial.

Credit usage: 5 credits for 1080p output, 20 credits for 4K output (based on a 10-second clip at 30 FPS).

Proteus

The versatile, general-purpose option, for upscaling, denoising, and sharpening low to medium quality sources. It performs especially well on old, grainy, or heavily compressed video, works on both progressive and interlaced footage, and gives you adjustable parameters for fine-tuning: compression recovery, detail enhancement, sharpening, noise reduction, de-halo, and anti-aliasing or de-blur.

Starlight Fast 2

Built for speed, producing realistic output and sharp detail in a fraction of the render time. Use it for high-volume work and fast turnarounds where visual fidelity still matters.

Credit usage: 5 credits for 1080p output, 20 credits for 4K output (based on a 10-second clip at 30 FPS).

Creative models

Astra 2

Creative diffusion upscaling that adds new detail and texture rather than only recovering what is already there, guided by adjustable Creativity and Sharpness controls (both 1 to 5) and an optional text prompt. It performs best on wide shots and large-scale scenes, on stylized and animated work, and on AI-generated footage you want transformed rather than preserved. It also handles live-action restoration well, staying close to the original capture while recovering detail, sharpness, and color accuracy.

At higher creativity, faces and expressions can shift and fine text can break down. For face-focused or text-heavy shots, lower the creativity or use a Precise model instead.

Frame Interpolation

Frame interpolation generates new frames between your existing ones using Apollo 8, either to raise the frame rate or to slow the footage down.

Higher frame rate

Makes motion smoother by raising the frame rate. AI-generated video often arrives at 24 FPS, which can look choppy on a modern display. You can take a clip to 30, 60, 90, or 120 FPS.

Slow motion

Slows the footage down without the stutter you get from simply stretching existing frames. Apollo generates the in-between frames, so a normal-speed clip becomes smooth slow motion.

Choose from 2x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x, or 16x.

HDR & Output Format

Hyperion 2.5 converts 8-bit SDR footage to true HDR and delivers it in professional formats: ProRes 10-bit, EXR 16-bit, or H.265 10-bit. It is a generative diffusion model, so it creates new shadow, highlight, and color detail rather than stretching what is already there, redistributing luminance and color across highlights, mid-tones, and shadows. Results are sharpest where SDR sources usually struggle: text, small faces, and fast motion. Hyperion works in 16-bit end to end and converts to the PQ colour space.

Run it last. Hyperion 2.5 does not upscale, enhance, or change the frame rate, and nothing can be applied after it. Its output resolution matches whatever reaches it. If you want a higher resolution or a different frame rate, set those up under Enhance & Upscale and Frame Interpolation in the same render; Hyperion always runs at the end of the chain.

HDR works with Starlight and Astra models only. If you have Proteus selected under Enhance & Upscale, switch to a Starlight or Astra model before you enable HDR.

Credit usage: 10 credits for 1080p output, 40 credits for 4K output (based on a 10-second clip at 30 FPS).

Available output formats

Hyperion 2.5 provides you with the following output formats:

  • ProRes 10-bit (default): For editing and grading in a professional NLE. BT.2020 primaries. Does not play in the browser, so you get a preview on screen and download the real file.
  • EXR 16-bit: For VFX and compositing. Downloads as an image sequence in a zip. BT.2020, linear rather than PQ. Download only.
  • H.265 10-bit: For delivery and playback, using the Main10 profile. Plays in the browser.

Standard renders without HDR are delivered as MP4.

Combining capabilities

All of these can run in one job. A common combination: upload 720p 24 FPS SDR footage, enhance and upscale to 4K with Starlight Precise 2.6, interpolate to 30 FPS, and convert to HDR as ProRes 10-bit. The result is a 4K, 30 FPS, HDR ProRes file.

Each step costs credits, so a combined render costs the sum of the models used.
